Age Cut Off for 2008
History
On January 8, 2005, USA
Baseball, the governing body for amateur baseball in the United States, approved a
motion recommending all youth baseball leagues change their age cut-off date
from July 31 to April 30. This is the date that determines a player's "league
age" and the division in which he or she plays. Players born in the months of
May, June, or July, who have historically been the youngest in their division,
would now be among the oldest.
The Boards of Little League
Baseball, USSSA
Baseball, and many other youth baseball organizations in the United States
voted to accept this change for their 2006 season. The International Board of
PONY Baseball voted on November
7th, 2005 to allow each Zone to choose its own date for the 2006 Season. The
North, West, European, and Mexico Zones decided to continue to use the
historical July 31 date, while the East, South, Caribbean, and Asia Pacific
Zones voted to switch to April 30.
On
March 30, 2006, PONY Baseball announced that the new April 30 date
will be applied to all Zones for 2007, 2008, and 2009. The age cut off date will
switch to January 1st for the 2010 season and beyond, thus bringing youth
baseball into line with the cut off date used internationally for baseball and
already used world-wide for softball.
As a chartered league of PONY Baseball and Softball, Inc., Stateline PONY Baseball will
use the April 30 cut off date for its
2008 baseball season.
Stateline Softball will
use the December 31, 2007, cut off date for its
2008 softball season. The
only exception to this date is in the Girls Coach Pitch II division which will
use an April 30, 2008 cut off
date.
How To Determine A Player's League AgeA baseball player's League Age for the
2008 season is his chronological age on April 30,
2008. For example, if a
player turns 10 on April 15, he would be considered league age 10, since he is
10 on April 30. If he turns 10 on May 15, he would be considered league age 9,
since he is 9 on April 30.
A softball player's League Age for the
2008 season is her chronological age on December 31,
2007. For example, if a
player turns 10 on December 15,
2007, she would be considered league age 10, since
she is
10 on December 31, 2007. If she turns 10 on January 15,
2008, she would be considered league age 9,
since she is 9 on December 31,
2007.
May, June, July, August Birthdays
For 2008, to accommodate those returning players who now face a third
year in the same division, the Board of Directors is
offering a one year “grandfather” exemption. These players have the option to
remain in their appropriate age division or play in the division above
-- please note that playing up (out of the appropriate age limit for that
division) into the Mustang, Bronco, or Pony divisions excludes a player from All-Star
competition and that player will then play three years in the new division.
